Matthew Freeman
My mission is to help people understand how their minds work through decision-making theory in chess. When you master one thing, you can master anything!

From Late Starter to State Champion
Started playing chess online in July 2001, then competed in my first USCF tournament in January 2002 with an initial USCF rating of 1642. Within just one year, I won the Virginia Grade 12 Scholastic Championship in 2003.
Defeated an International Master in a FIDE classical tournament—proof that with the right mindset and approach, any goal is achievable.
After relocating to Rhode Island, I quickly established dominance by winning multiple East Providence Chess Club and Cranston Chess Club monthly championships, culminating in winning the 2024-25 Rhode Island State Championship.
Despite stops, starts, and long absences from chess, I reached my goals while mastering myself in the process. Blessed with wise coaching and mentorship, I now dedicate myself to paying that forward to others on their journey.

The Four Pillars of Decision-Making
I teach a decision-making method that transforms how you approach a chess position:
Observation
Elemental analysis of a position which informs evaluation. Use classical principles and modern insights to see what's truly important.
Evaluation
Form natural language opinions as the basis for candidate selection. Transform your earlier observations into actionable insights.
Three Candidates
The human mind is a difference engine which must be given multiple options to function.
Deduction
Learn to eliminate flawed candidates until one remains. Build up a robust repertoire of static and dynamic patterns to aid in the process.
“My method is a simple feedback engine. It helps you notice what matters, compare moves, and choose with confidence. It never forces a style. With practice, you discover and develop your own way to play.”
